Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders: A Serotonergic Hypothesis
نویسنده
چکیده
Historically, obsessions and compulsions have been mentioned in the religious and nonscientific literature for centuries. Obsessivecompulsive features are not only present in individuals, but constitute an important part of collective rituals and ceremonies including magic and superstition (Meyer, 1968). The purpose of this paper will be focused on the medical aspects of obsessions and compulsions with much less emphasis on the psychosocial approach. In the United States of America, obsessions and compulsions are usually classified under the label of anxiety neurosis in spite of the fact that anxiety is only one of the symptoms. In addition, anxiety may be an effect rather than a cause in the pathology of obsessive-compulsive disorders. Besides, obsessions and compulsions are not uncommon in other neuropsychiatric

Role of the orbital cortex and of the serotonergic system in a rat model of obsessive compulsive disorder.
The serotonergic system and the orbitofrontal cortex have been consistently implicated in the pathophysiology of obsessive compulsive disorder. Yet, the relations between these two systems and the ways they interact in producing obsessions and compulsions are poorly understood. The present study tested the hypothesis that pathology of the orbitofrontal cortex leads to a dysregulation of the ser...
متن کاملCompulsions, Aggression, and Self-Mutilation: A Hypothalamic Disorder?
Twelve patients characterized by aggressive behavior, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, selfmutilation, sexual disorders, insomnia, and disturbances in the family constellation are described. Secondary findings in some patients included high pain threshold, abnormal EEC, and altered glucose-tolerance curves. Nine had a past history of anorexia nervosa and four patients of psychosis. Out of eight t...

S everal lines of investigation support a serotonergic hypothesis for the pathophysiology and treatment of OCD. Clomipramine, a tricyclic antidepressant that is a potent serotonin uptake inhibitor, was the first pharmacologic treatment for OCD to be studied in large multicenter trials. The successful outcome of these studies resulted in marketing approval by the United States Food and Drug Admi...
متن کاملPsilocybin and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a psychiatric disorder with considerable morbidity and mortality. This condition disables many individuals and is often refractory to treatment. Research suggests that serotonin plays a role in OCD symptom reduction. We present a case of an individual who successfully used psilocybin, a serotonergic agent, to reduce the core symptoms of OCD for several yea...
متن کامل5-HT2c receptor activation induces grooming behaviour in rats: possible correlations with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Excessive self-grooming in animal models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is regarded as an equivalent of compulsive behaviour in OCD patients. Previous studies have suggested a key modulatory role of certain serotonin2 receptor subtypes both in grooming behaviour and OCD. Certain 5-HT2 receptor agonists were reported to exacerbate symptoms in OCD patients. Here we report that activation ...
